Infidelity and affairs
Infidelity can be the most painful and hurtful situation a relationship will ever face.
Being ‘cheated on’ activates primal feelings of rejection, undesirability and jealousy. It can be particularly destructive when one partner - through past experiences, upbringing or trauma - already struggles with their sense of self worth.
In an exclusive relationship, it can also seem an insurmountable breach of trust, regardless of whether the affair is physical or emotional.
There is no simple solution to deal with infidelity. Relationship counselling can help you and your partner to explore what was happening in the relationship when the affair occurred, and seek to address the deeper feelings and impacts of the infidelity.
Together, we can explore whether forgiveness and trust are achievable, and what changes in behaviour may be required to move the relationship forward.
